A VISION IN BLUE.

Welcome to the Blue Bug Blog.

It’s all about clarity. The vision of Blue Bug Digital is quite simple; to harness the communications power of the digital landscape, tame it, distill it, and put it to work.

We’re offering internships!

We’re looking for social media intern(s) for paid, full-time internship positions. If you:

• Get social media. You have a personal account on every social media platform. You read blogs. A lot. You understand how to find blogs relevant to a client’s industry. You’re on Facebook and play with new apps all the time. You understand how social media applies to the marketing world and can get results.
• Love data. You know that it’s “trackability” that makes Internet marketing so exciting. You understand web analytics reports (specifically Google Analytics and Google Adwords), and you know how to pull relevant pieces out to discuss with clients and establish clear strategic direction.
• Are creative. You’re creative in your strategic thinking and your problem solving. Your creativity is one of your strongest assets, and you know how to use your resources.
• Are a consultant. You are business savvy. You think strategically and can quickly provide measurable value to an engagement. You love your work, and even more, you love finding the “just right” solution.
• Are results-focused. Your clients are paying to see results. You know the most important part of your job is to see higher conversion rates for your marketing efforts. You want to help your clients increase their leads, revenue, and ultimately achieve the goals of their site.
• Are a hard-working, action-oriented person. No matter what you’re doing, you take pride in your work. You enjoy responsibility and you’re happy to be empowered. You know that real effort pays off daily and you do everything with the same high-intensity, high-quality attitude – regardless of the task at hand.
• Are well-organized and detail-oriented. You can handle several projects at once without anything slipping through the cracks. You have a knack for sensing where priorities lie, and you know how to work independently with confidence and style.
• Are a good writer. You know the difference between business writing and social media writing, you know how to encourage engagement and interaction on Facebook and Twitter.

Embracing QR Codes

You’re probably thinking, “WE GET IT, you love QR codes, enough already,” and you’re right, we really do (we heart them). And now that CNN is talking about them, our love has been validated, and boy, that makes us feel super.

The appeal, for both marketers and consumers, lays in the never-ending quest to make our lives easier and to get our information quicker. According to Matthias Galica, CEO of ShareSquare, a QR code platform:

“Imagine you see a poster of your favorite artist’s upcoming concert,” Galica said. “Usually, you would have to go home to look them up. But QR codes work as paper-based hyperlinks that can lead you to music videos, the site for MP3 downloads, and even purchase tickets right there.”

According to a February survey of U.S. smartphone users by MGH, a Baltimore social-media marketing company, 32% of respondents said they have scanned a QR code. Of those, 53% said they used the code to get a coupon or discount. And 72% said they were more likely to remember an advertisement with a QR code.

Use caution if you plan on tackling this technology, QR code campaigns can (and have) gone awry, so it’s important to keep in mind the following when implementing QR codes in print advertising:

  • Direct the user somewhere of value - don’t use a QR code as your Facebook avatar that directs users to… your Facebook profile
  • QR code design is finicky, the border should not be clipped
  • Keep the print background white, or a very light shade that will not interfere with the QR code’s readability
  • Ensure the code appears in the correct dimensions and size relative to the anticipated angle and distance from user
  • Keep in mind reflections and shadows can interfere with an app’s ability to scan the QR code, so don’t slap QR codes on menus in a dim restaurant
  • Lastly, and most importantly, always ALWAYS test the QR code before committing to print (sorry for yelling that one at you, but it’s that important)

Our verdict? QR codes are not a passing fad; they’re versatile, simple, and riding the wave of the smart phone boom. We’ve used them successfully for clients, and for ourselves. What do you think about this new(ish) mobile medium?

(our self-serving QR code)

The Growth of Mobile Marketing and Tagging

If there’s anything we love more than mobile around here, it’s QR Codes. Mobile internet usage is on track to overtake desktop usage by 2015, and according to Microsoft Tag’s predictions, it will become the preferred platform by as early as 2014.

Microsoft Tag breaks down every aspect of mobile internet usage, and it’s crazeh.

Color, the newest mobile photo app with a social networking twist, comes from the minds of pedigreed entrepreneurs and $41 million in funding. Its goal? To become the ultimate local discovery tool.

The app just launched on the iPhone (as of yesterday), and even Mashable is not quite sure what to make of it… and to be honest, neither are we. The app gives users a way to share mulitmedia content (photo and video) with an ‘elastic network’ - meaning your network changes based on who you share photos the most with, and who you’re in closest proximity too. According to Mashable:

The app is packed with a ton of technology; for example, it doesn’t simply use the GPS to figure out your location, but it uses your camera to determine lighting and your microphone to hone in on ambient noise. By matching these environmental conditions, Color is shockingly accurate at determining who’s in the room with you and even where they are in relation to your position.

We’ve downloaded it, poked around a bit, watched the video… our conclusion: we could see this booming in conferences, events, festivals, and concerts. And we’re keeping our eye on it. What do you think?

Augmented Reality Just Got Cooler.

Are you feeling a little down about the quality of augmented reality implementations lately? Well turn that frown upside down.

Popcode is doing it better. They’re making markless, interactive AR implementations that are richer than in the past (and in my opinion, way more fun), and the video overload below shows some really great concepts. Games, audio, even Ikea furniture instructions are possible! (Thank heavens)
